WHO ARE LOCAL VOCALZ ?
Local Vocalz is a mixed voice choir based in Cornwall. The choir has two groups - one in Falmouth and one covering the west Cornwall area. During the last few years, the choir has won trophies in several local music festivals, performed in venues such as The Minack Theatre (twice), Truro Cathedral, Gwennap Pit, Bayeaux Cathedral, Josselin Basilica, Locronan (Historic village) and St Gildas Abbey Church in France, St Michael's Mount and even in the Holman's test mine in a vast cavern where we also ate pasties and drank wine by candle-light! The choir enjoys an annual four day weekend trip to France in May. In February 2014, Local Vocalz released our first CD entitled "We Will Sing".
WHAT SORT OF MUSIC DOES THE CHOIR SING?
The choir sings a wide range of music from classical to pop and just about every other genre in between! We don't do musical snobbery! We aim to sing a wide range of music and sing it well. Take a look at our "Repertoire" page to get a feel for the sort of music that we sing.
WHO CAN JOIN?
The choir is open to any singers from the age of 18 upwards. There is no upper age limit. There are no auditions and you won't be asked to sing on your own. The membership of the choir includes experienced singers, "returners" (people who haven't sung in a choir for a long time) and people with absolutely no experience of singing at all. Whichever of those three categories you fall into, you will be made to feel extremely welcome and soon feel part of a wonderful group of people.
WHEN DOES THE CHOIR REHEARSE AND WHAT IS THE COMMITTMENT?
Local Vocalz (West Cornwall) rehearse on Monday nights at 8pm in Hayle.
Falmout Vocalz rehearse on Wednesday evenngs at 8pm in Falmouth.
See the individual choir pages for further information.
The choirs rehearse for approximately 40 weeks of the year. The committment is to weekly rehearsals, not a turn up when you feel like it session! We offer you the opportunity to have a trial rehearsal with us to see if Local Vocalz is for you, but when you sign up you are committing yourself to weekly choir rehearsals. Choirs are a team effort and so it is good to feel that there is consistency, which is why making this commitment is important. Some people unavoidably have to miss the occasional rehearsal due, for example, to work commitments, holiday or illness.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Choir subs are £5 per week (payable weekly). The subs are paid for each of the 40 weeks that the choir rehearses but each member gets one week each term when they don't have to pay which means in effect, the choir subs are actually £4.50 per week. the choir subs include all sheet music, administration, public liability insurance, venue hire and payment of the conductor and accompanists who are both full time freelance professional musicians. A small bursary fund exists to help out in cases of financial hardship. No-one is refused membership of the choir if they are stuggling financially.
DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC?
No. Some members of the choir read music fluently, others don't read music at all, but we try to envcouraged everyone to pick up a few simple music reading skills as they go along!
IS THERE A SOCIAL SIDE TO THE CHOIR?
Yes! We hold regular social events including meals out, choir parties, quizzes and every year, we have a four day (optional!) trip to France which consists of lots of singing, sightseeing, eating, drinking and socialising!
